Neurological Rehabilitation Massage

Neurological Rehabilitation Massage is a specialized form of manual massage that releases strain, pressure and pain in the muscles by working on the nervous system. The nervous system consists of two main parts: the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. The sympathetic system is responsible for the “Fight, Flight, Freeze, or Faint” responses. The parasympathetic system is responsible for the classical phrase “Rest and Digest” responses. Since the nervous system is responsible for volitional movement or the intended execution of an action a compromised nervous system can negatively impact musculoskeletal performance.

There are different ways to approach Neurological Rehabilitation Massage as you would like to work on the nervous system first or work on a muscle that has been compromised to release stored trauma within that particular tissue. The massage utilizes static pressure on specific myofascial points. The therapy involves applying alternating levels of concentrated pressure to the trigger point – usually using the fingers, knuckles or elbow. This technique manipulates the muscles, tendons and connective tissue to balance the central nervous system.

Strained areas in the muscle have a contracture of tissue, and cannot relax, due to lack of blood and nutrients in that area. The area is hypersensitive and can cause pain, fatigue, and weakness in the muscle. In a healthy individual, nerves slowly transmit impulses to our brains, to control movements and thoughts. Injury, trauma and stress cause nerves to speed up their transmission, causing pain and dysfunction in the body. Neurological disorders can also cause a reduction in flexibility, range of movement and an increase in pain and tight muscles. Many of these symptoms can be addressed through this specialized massage therapy which can enable you to gain a greater quality of life.

Neurological Rehabilitation Massage is different from other massages in that it focuses on the nervous system, e.g., nerve gliding or Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF).

“…Glenn’s technique and knowledge of anatomy is excellent and extremely precise. He uses multiple adjunctive technologies and relaxation aids which add greatly to the experience. He found my pressure spots and problematic muscles immediately and analyzed the secondary compensatory areas…” – Robin K.

Neurological Rehab Massage, stabilizes low levels of neurological activity, to maintain overall health by increasing blood supply to soft tissues, decreasing pressure on a nerve, and balancing the muscular system. Glenn will apply alternating levels of concentrated pressure on specific areas of the muscles. After the muscle is relaxed through massage, the lactic acid will be released from the muscle, and the muscle will start receiving increased blood and oxygen. Following a neurological rehabilitation massage, any soreness that presents itself will subside after 24 to 48 hours. The muscles that were tight should remain noticeably more relaxed for four to 14 days, depending on stress, activity, and severity of muscle pain, prior to the massage.

“I am beyond grateful to have found Glenn! His technique and knowledge of anatomy is excellent and extremely precise. He uses multiple adjunctive technologies and relaxation aids which add greatly to the experience. He found my pressure spots and problematic muscles immediately and analyzed the secondary compensatory areas. He constantly communicated with me to make sure I was comfortable but above all, his energy is incredible. I am so grateful to have found a massage therapist I can recommend to my own patients! His cards will be right beside mine. I am one VERY happy dentist.” – Dr. Pelin Montero
